Absence Management during the Olympic Games

Employee absence could reach an all time high as the Olympic Games get under way. Employers need to use different management techniques and flexible working patterns to encourage their staff to come to and stay at work.

From the results of our research it seems that the majority of employers have no plans in place to help manage staff absence during the Games. Professional advice suggests that there are different approaches that employers can consider to help employees enjoy the events that are important to them without compromising the needs of the business. These may include:

- Flexible working hours
- Shift swaps
- Unpaid leave
- Special screening of events on the premises

By making your organisations policy clear on absence your staff are aware that there are disciplinary consequences for taking unauthorised time off without good reason or for not performing satisfactorily at work.

From our experience as suppliers of absence management systems we suggest that employers should encourage workers to use annual leave and particularly discourage general absenteeism. One way of monitoring and reporting on absence management is by using an electronic time recording system.
These are designed to provide you with all aspects of employee behaviour in the workplace from clocking in to lunch breaks, hours worked to overtime and overall absence patterns.

These reports indicate areas for attention for immediate action. Is your company prepared?

Employee's Poor Health Is Costing Business Almost £3 Billion Per Year

The survey undertaken by the Centre for Economics and Business Research focused on the reasons for absence from work and the behaviour patterns of employees both in their private life and at work.

Bupa, who commissioned the report, focus heavily of providing employers with advice on how to encourage their employees to lead a healthier life style away from work.

Vizual focus heavily on providing employers with advice and systems that encourage employees to lead a healthier life style at work.

The report states that just three in ten employees take a lunch hour, and the impact this is having could well be significant as almost half feel their productivity levels plummet in the afternoon around 3pm and as a result lose almost forty minutes of their day due to this dip.

Taking an entire hour for lunch can often be difficult however taking breaks at regular intervals throughout the day can help employees stay alert and focused.

By using an attendance management system employees are encouraged to clock on lunch and breaks throughout the day. Reports can be viewed in real time by line managers to ensure their employees are taking the necessary time in a day to recharge their batteries helping productivity levels to stay high.

Employees will also feel motivated as they feel their employer is ‘looking after their health’. A high motivation level leads to a healthier employee, higher productivity, high attendance and significant savings for the company.
